Francois - we are in the same boat, I'm also considering a CPU upgrade. However, I have noticed that the choices on the market are much fewer with each passing day. Actually, at the moment you can only get Sonnet and Powerlogix 1.6 - 1.8 GHz upgrades. I was aiming for 1.2, but they are not available, I was also unable to find any Cube upgrades from Giga anywhere. You will also need a fan for these upgrades, but I already put one in few years back when I upgraded the hard drive. I haven't seen any used upgrades, but new ones are around $350-$450 (US) From riba at ml1.net Thu Feb 1 00:35:03 2007 From: riba at ml1.net (Riba) Date: Thu Feb 1 00:33:55 2007 Subject: [Cube] Thinking about a upgrade In-Reply-To: <277a8da54dea83cfc2ca16f5632c37cd@verizon.net> References: <277a8da54dea83cfc2ca16f5632c37cd@verizon.net> Message-ID: <01A7130F-4308-4A77-A555-8F08AA8B7D7E@ml1.net> On 2007.02.01, at 08:51, Kathleen Lawrence wrote: > > On Jan 31, 2007, at 10:53 PM, Francois wrote: > >> 1 want to be able to run no fan. I eventually regulated my cube to internet browsing and email. The problem with upgrading via an upgrade card is just common sense. You can buy a stripped down Mini-Mac for $600 dollars that is by far faster than any upgrade you can do, remember the bus is still slow no matter how fast you make the CPU. For just under $800.00 you can buy a Mini-Mac that has a DVD. As much as we all love our Cubes, there comes a time when we have to own up to the facts, it is far better the buy new then to remodel. Keep in mind Apple really no longer supports their Apple monitor ADC connection so if you have that kind of monitor you will be buying an adapter that will cost you around $100.00,if you have a VGA or DVI style connection monitor you are OK Kim Simmons On Feb 1, 2007, at 3:35 AM, Riba wrote: > > On 2007.02.01, at 08:51, Kathleen Lawrence wrote: > >> >> On Jan 31, 2007, at 10:53 PM, Francois wrote: >> >>> 1 want to be able to run no fan. I have had very poor luck with upgrading cpu's ever since they became available for Mac's. After a while it has become more of a reality check. Yes we can upgrade, but should we? The system bus is still going to be what it is so no matter how fast we upgrade the CPU to be we are still trying to channel all that speed thru the slower buss. Long term, it is far better to buy a new or refurbished computer when we need the speed. We do not need speed for word processing, internet or email, so keeping my Cube's CPU stock makes sense, at least for me. My Cube is going to stay as she is for a long time, chances are she will continue running long after we have multi ghz machines available out there. She might be slow but she is very dependable and running the latest OS software she can run. Well, if anyone on this list decides to sell just the CPU upgrade card, let me know. I really nave no need to spend $350 for the cards that are currently on the market.
