Quick Scanner question.

OK I know this isn't exactly iBook related, but my Hewlett Packard 5300c
scanner is becoming very problematic. It begins a scan, and then lets out a
very loud, high pitched buzzing/whirring/grating noise, comes to a halt, and
the scanner bulb flashes a 5-flash signal. Nothing happens after that.

I want to take it apart and have a look at it. Are there any noxious
substances, electrical build ups or explosive things that I should be aware
of first?
