partitioning query

Sorry if this has cropped up before - I've just found this list.

In the software that came with my iBook, system 9.2.2 is on the Software
Restore discs rather than the installation discs. You can only install this
on a drive that has OSX on it. So how do you get 9.2.2 onto a different
parition from OSX?

I've tried using a completely different 9.2.1 installation disc to do it but
get a message saying it can't be used with this computer.

Am I missing something simple?
