What's a Java Console?

Ever since I upgraded my 800MHz ibook to 10.2.4, I've had a window 
headed "Java Console" popping up at odd moments. It contains esoteric 
communications which I am unable to decipher. I also seem unable to 
join a chat which I had had no trouble with on my old Mac.

Can someone give me some directions, please. I have java enabled in my 
system preferences.
