One of the frequent complaints about OS X when it was first released 
was the size of the type in the menu bar (and the fact that you 
couldn't alter it). I find that some applications have so many (or so 
many long) menu items that they'll occasionally force the "status" 
icons off. My guess is this is probably what's happened to you.
