Tossing out preferences and even replacing the extension may help, if 
the problem isn't hardware.

Cleaning the surface of the trackpad may help but probably won't. Just 
wipe with a dry/damp cloth, gently.

I noticed while listening to the Capital Gang on CNN rant on pro and 
con about UM's 20 points for Blacks that not one of the CG on CNN is 
Black.
