One try might be to boot and hold down the T key. The book might start 
in target disk mode and you can connect via Firewire or SCSI (I forget 
what the tangerine has but think it is Firewire). I believe this is 
controlled by firmware in the chips rather than software. If you see 
the icon meandering across your screen (assuming you haven't turned the 
lamps off) you can then connect via wire to another Mac and get to the 
file.
