I know what this is - you're hitting the "up" key sometimes when you're pressing shift for capitals. I do this all the time - shift+up highlights a block of text, specifically backwards from the point of the cursor upto the same column that the cursor is on, but on the previous line (have a press and see what I mean). Of course, I then hit my letter to get the capital I was going for, but it deletes all the highlighted text in doing so. I do it a couple of times a week, especially when I'm a bit tired.
