Offhand, I'd venture a barely-educated guess that the 10.3 preview 
might have caused an increase in disc access for VM operations (being 
as it's a beta version and still in development); but that wouldn't 
explain why the situation wasn't remedied when you reinstalled 10.2.6. 
I'm stumped.
