Should work just fine, I would invest in Roxio Toast if the CD-RW/DVD drive
does not come with its own mac software, if I were him.  You can find some
great deals on dealmac.com for combo drives already in firewire cases too.

There may be, though its probably a stretch, firewire burners/dvd drives that
are bus powered, if the portable issue is important to him.
