What's the skinny on windows media player for mac?

I couldn't bring myself to put a MicroSoft product on my clean Mac.  I 
found an open source package called VideoLAN and so far it has played 
the MicroSoft media (audio and video) that has been sent to me by the 
uninformed.  It also plays a bunch of other audio and video formats.
