I'm actually using exactly what you described: my iBook G4 wirelessly 
connected to a flat screen iMac with an Airport Extreme base station. 
Works without problems (I've been using this setup only for a week). A 
USB HP printer is shared and hooked on the base station. I don't know 
about other wireless routers, but Airport is really easy to setup and 
manage.
