Here in Australia, a typical AU$50 (~US$42) per month 'broadband' connection will give 256kb download, and 64kb upload. Needless to say, there are relatively few people who actually use this.. The fastest connection I've ever seen in Oz is what I get at uni. This is on aarnet (a national education network), and it gets about a 5mb download, typically. Presumably, in less wealthy countries (or more isolated ones - if that's possible ;-) this is even worse.
