VLC and DVD's

I like VLC it is a great software for watching DVD's and ignores 
coding as noted and also plays just about any kind of video I have 
run across.

But this ability to rip and encode DVD? I can't seem to find that 
documented and I can't seem to make that work. Does anyone know?
