iBook batteries have a sort of  "smart" power management circuitry that 
regulates charging cycles; but it occasionally ends up with to 
incorrect data on battery capacity, and stops charging the battery 
before it's at full capacity. It can be reset, usually by draining the 
battery and recharging it -- I think this is what happened in your 
case, as the battery slowly lost it's charge in storage.
