I use the newer MacAlly aluminium case; it's fairly silent, and since 
the power supply is external, there is no cooling fan to create noise.

Using it with Maxtor drives, it's small and quiet enough to be 
practical. The LaCie D2 cases were also silent, at least the two I've 
used.
