[iBook] OS X drivers for Epson 777i printers?

Like Vuescan it is developed to add features to the factory supplied 
program but also gives support to orphaned equiptment. It has a long 
list of supported printers, not just Epson. How come a 3rd party ( in 
Vuescans case a single person ) with no factory help can reverse 
engineer a driver and the manufacturer who has all the specs can't. It 
feels like a slap in the face.
