[iBook] How far can I go into 10.x?

I like 9.2.2.
I'm comfortable with 9.2.2.
But TurboTax wants 10.2.8 at least.
Yes, there are several advantages to the system upgrade (for instance, I
could get my photos directly off my Canon Powershot). But, well, see
above.
So....
I have a Graphite iBook SE (466 MHz w/ Firewire & CD/DVD-ROM), with 320
MB RAM.
Apple says that I can go to 10.4.5.
1) Is 10.4.5 practicable on my machine?
2) Would something between 10.4.5 & 10.2.8 be "better" in some way?
3) If I want to get something less that 10.4.5, where do I get it? Would
it save money?
4) As an option, could I install 10.2+ on my external firewire HD? If
so, how?

(To those folks with the suggestions on how to get my photos from my
Canon Powershot 610; Thanks all of you for your suggestions. Yes I
thought about the card reader, I just wanted to make sure I hadn't
missed an option with just the camera and a cable. Evidently, not. Well,
this upgrade will solve that problem also. And I may still get the card
reader, so I don't need to start the camera just to retrieve the
photos.)
