[iBook] system freeze following sound

Joy,

The hard drive is underneath the left hand rest and the cooling fan is near
the slots adjacent to the lid hinge.  When the cooling fan is running it
draws air in via the slots at the left edge, across the hard drive and
other internal components, and out the slots near the hinge.

Opening the iBook for the first time can be a challenge, fortunately there
are good resources available on-line:
