I think your optical drive has failed during the installation of the 
Epson software. If you look in System Profiler under "ATA" can you see 
the drive?

Another thing to try is to start in Safe Mode "Hold down the Shift key 
immediately after the startup tone, and release when you see the 
progress bar," says Mac help. That will turn off all but Apple 
software, if there is a problem there, your optical drive should 
return.

Alas, it is probably a problem with the optical drive.
