I built one. I got a USB/Firewire 5.25" enclosure for about $40, and had 
a DVD+/-RW drive in the spares bin. A basic DVD-ROM drive is under $10, 
a writer $30-40. Takes about 10 minutes to build, but you do need to 
know which end of a screwdriver to hold.

It's ugly, but it works.
