[iBook] iBook printer problems

My G4 iBook (1.33 GHz, 768 MB ram) was running beautifully under OS X  
10.3 Panther but wanting to run some more modern software I upgraded  
to 10.4, Panther.
Everything seems to work fine (and a bit faster) except that I can't  
see any printers when I open the print and Fax pane of System  
preferences.
I have reloaded the HP printer drivers from the Tiger dvd but still  
no joy.
Any suggestions?
