From sng at cox.net Thu Jan 25 20:40:35 2007 From: sng at cox.net (Steve Goldstein) Date: Thu Jan 25 20:40:50 2007 Subject: [iMac] cannot boot new 500 GB SATA II HD installed into G5 20" iMac Message-ID: Folks, Any insight would be helpful. My wife's G5 iMac came with a 150 GB HD (Western Digital). She has outgrown it. So, I ordered a 500 GB Samsung SATA II HD501LJ. I cloned the existing HD to it using Carbon Copy Cloner. The 500 GB Samsung was in an external USB 2.0 SATA enclosure. After cloning, I installed it inside the iMac, and it would not start up. I can start the iMac with a backup external Firewire drive, and when I do, I can open the 500 GB Samsung internal. Everything seems to be there. I also rebuilt its directory with DiskWarrior, repaired permissions, and Zapped the PRAM through three bongs on a startup. Also pressed the PMU button inside the imac. Nothing works. Booting with Option key held down or selecting StartupDisk in System Preferences shows this new Samsung drive as a valid startup drive. If I try to start up with it, I get the gray screen with the Apple logo and the rotating wheel/gear, but that can go on forever and ever. Also, I tried a Safe Boot, and the same thing happened: the gear wheel kept spinning. AppleCare was no help. I got a clueless guy with an Indian accent who put me on hold for about five minutes while he consulted "a supervisor." Then he came back and told me to bring it to Apple Service. Grrrr. Does anybody know if the G5 iMac can boot from a 500 GB [Samsung] SATA II drive? BTW, I have a 20" Intel Core Duo iMac, and I only regret that I cannot take that one apart (at least without voiding Cupertino's protective cloak). Thanks for any input. --Steve (who has been taking Macs apart since 1989) From michaelmurphy at mac.com Thu Jan 25 21:04:57 2007 From: michaelmurphy at mac.com (Michael Murphy) Date: Thu Jan 25 21:05:17 2007 Subject: [iMac] cannot boot new 500 GB SATA II HD installed into G5 20" iMac In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: I put a 750 GB hd into my original iMac G5 without problem. I did use a Firewire external enclosure for cloning the drive though. This might be your problem. If I recall correctly you can boot from an external disk only if it is Firewire. You can't boot from USB external hard disks. Does your enclosure has a firewire port? I have an external enclosure with an Oxford 924 chip set on order, and it is my intention to re-clone the drive once it arrives. The vendor is cooldrives.com, and apparently they build to order and do not ship instantly. So, I will have to wait. --Steve At 11:04 PM -0600 1/25/07, Michael Murphy wrote: >I put a 750 GB hd into my original iMac G5 without problem. However, I used the external enclosure only for cloning the drive, and then I installed it into the G5 iMac (this was one that users can open up, not the daylight sensing model which I believe is sealed to the explorations of mere mortals). So, my guess is that somehow cloning it in the external USB enclosure prior to installing it into the iMac itself left something wanting. I will have to wait until the new Firewire SATA enclosure that I ordered from cooldrives.com (these babies cost $107 each!) arrive and then re-clone to test.
