two different links to the same file?

Especially with a large jazz collection, the same track can be found on
several different compilations and artist retrospectives. I would have
dozens of album/playlists that still would not show up in browser and
search results. A built in iTunes alias/link would be a helpful feature
when consolidating a large cd collection via iTunes.

If this link could over-ride id3 fields on the linked file, then you
could implement multiple listings for artists and albums. If I id a
track's artist as 'Tony Bennett & k.d. Lang' for a duet, then my iPod's
artist list ends up containing 'Tony Bennett', 'k.d. Lang', and 'Tony
Bennett & k.d. Lang'. I currently use the comment field to list
associated players in iTunes, but iPod doesn't use that field.

You could also adjust the start and stop time if the link could
over-ride those options as well; so with live tracks you could edit out
intros or lengthy applause in the linked version and still have the
full original version available. Another example, I could choose the
original version of 'The Girl From Impanema' with the Portuguese
beginning intact or a linked version that cuts to the English verse.
All this without multiple files and megabytes.
