Ah, did not know that.  Thanks you for the education.  I guess then the
issue is that the aliases don't follow accurately when you move your media
from one drive or location to another.

Come to think of it probably this was the cause of thousands of duplicates I
created when I Imported from my remote music library which I had moved from
one drive to another.  The alias is "out" by the new name of the new drive
(or folder) and iTunes probably sees an identical song as new media and
imports it freshly.

Still pretty primitive not to give you a heads-up when this is happening,
like iPhoto does.
