AFAIK, the only real issue is whether the hub is powered or not. A USB port only puts out limited power. Some USB peripherals require more power than the USB port can supply (or in the case of a hub, multiple peripherals may need more than it can supply.) If you have power hungry peripherals, look for a self-powered Hub.
