I've recaptured about 30 albums or so.  What I'm finding is that 
albums that I very recently encoded as MP3 with the last version of 
iTunes 3 ARE re-encoding with all tags, play count, etc. preserved. 
But albums that I encoded with earlier releases of iTunes are not 
preserving all of their metadata... or at least that seems to be the 
difference.
