Designating an album as a compilation will result in 'Various
Artists' displaying in Cover Flow view, whereas there may be cases
where most tracks on an album are by a particular artists but some
tracks involve the participation of someone else also. You can
specify the difference on a per-track basis ('with Such-and-such'',
for instance) but avoid Cover Flow displaying two instances of the
album cover by filling in the principal artist's name as Album Artist.

further detail.
