[iTunes] attaching the .itl library to a new version of iTunes

Ken, or whoever,

I have a similar problem, only with iPhoto. I would like to keep an  
alternate file of photos, that I can get to, but not have it as part  
of and slowing down my main photos.

Are there similar techniques in iPhoto to create this alternate file?
