I think most people have moved on to another (Macbook?) list. My only laptop IS an iBook, a 700Mhz version - so that is why I'm still a list subscriber. Thanks That's a good question - a lot of earlier machines were able to use later RAM which allowed more than what Apple declared as the max. However your machine took just one card with 256MB on the logic board. I'm not aware that 2GB cards were ever available in PC2100 DDR266, unless someone knows better. -- Best wishes Malcolm Cornelius - The Powerbook Fanatic http://www.pbfanatic.co.uk From skygram at gmail.com Wed Jun 27 11:18:21 2007 From: skygram at gmail.com (Skygram) Date: Wed Jun 27 11:18:49 2007 Subject: [iBook] Is this list still active? I am also worried that my G4-400mhz will also be dropped. Both machines have been workhorses. They have paid for themselves over and over. However I don't really have the bucks to move up to the newer machines at this time. Sure I could buy a lower end Mac but I really require a tower and a laptop. So from my perspective I am looking at roughly five or six thousand dollars of expenditures. I use it primarily for writing and photography and some limited video renditions. I guess I will have to start saving up. However all good things come to and end the other day when some sector of the hard disk rendered itself unusable. Therefore I need to change my hard disk and hopefully anyone out there can help me with this. 1. I am planning to upgrade my hard disk from the 20G IDE ATA 66 5400RPM to 80G IDE ATA 7200RPM, - The increase in RPM, does it affect the performance of the iBook G3 700MHZ? - Has anyone tried that before? 2. If you have tried it, how was the performance of MacOS X after the upgrade? Any more frequent occurance of 'Freeze', 'Hang' as reported to be ? - Before the 20G HD od my iBook kong out, the MacOS X jaguar running on it was superbly reliable and seldom hang. 3. Unfortunately as the last victim of the slot-loading DVD/CD combo, the DVD/CD reader of my iBook was spoilt by some careless individual. - Is it possible to install MacOS X on to the newly upgraded iBook externally say, through another Mac by making my ibook startup pressing 'R' key? (Thereby making it a external hard drive?) Thanks for your insight and helpfulness.
