Mostly folks who have switched over from Windows. I need to backup 2 hard disks to a single hard disk for a client. We have looked at all the backup programs and have settled on rsync because it will give us a readable copy of the files that we need to backup. Now in Windows, I would create a batch file with the command I want and then use the inbuilt scheduler to run it at a specified time. How do I do the same on a Mac? The OS is Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 and the backup is from 2 internal hard disks to an external hard disk. We wanna run the "batch file" at 10pm at night every weekday. Not sure if this will be helpful, but the command lines will probably be: rsync -auv /Volumes/Storage_1 /Volumes/External_1/Storage_1 rsync -auv /Volumes/Storage_2 /Volumes/External_1/Storage_2 If someone can give me some ideas about how to get pointed in the right direction with a basic idea, I can go and do some more searching..... I recently signed off the web-dev list because of someone stalking me and berating me with four letter words in private email all because he did not like the theme of a website for which I'd asked help for my php code that was munged. The Apple monitor banned him... So now I'm left with this list alone for computer lists. The fractured title still cracks me up though.. SuperDuper. http://www.shirtpocket.com Costs $24. Uses rsync (is actually just a very well-written GUI wrapper for it). MUCH easier to work with, schedule, edit, etc. command line to do a backup ... that's soooo Windows for ya ... There are 2 problems with your suggestion. Cost and availability. rsync is available on all UNIX's and is free. Why would I want to pay $24 for something that I can make happen so easily? 1). Create a batch file to do what you need. 2). Create a scheduled task to make the file happen at the time you want. 3). Simple, easy and cheap! There is no advantage to me or the client to go and spend $24 to do what can be done easily with a simple batch file (or the equivalent under unix) And the sarcastic comment wasn't needed. Command lines were around long before Mac OS and will be here long after it is gone. cjc On 30/06/2008, at 12:31 PM, Charles Martin wrote: > > SuperDuper. > > http://www.shirtpocket.com > > Costs $24. At lowendmac, http://lowendmac.com/lists/index.shtml there is a nice selection of lists which range from little to very active. Newbies are always showing up. Even there, the hardware lists have greater membership than the software lists. I belong to maybe a half dozen lowendmac lists. For those with a lot of traffic, I opt for the digest e-mail mode where I can quickly scan the topic lists at the top of the digest. Usually I only hear from someone with this problem two or three times a year, but for some reason this is the third time this month that I've heard from someone with this problem. Your Mac has filled up with something invisible that is out of control, so logically it must be either a log, a cache, or an index file. Generally it is one of the first two, but I've seen it also be a corrupted Spotlight database. So lets start with the most likely culprits. The first thing to try is simply restarting your Mac. If that doesn't help... Run Cache Out X to clear caches, and then MacJanitor to clear your log files: Cache Out X (Free) http://www.trilateralsystems.com/CacheOutX/ MacJanitor (Free) http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html If these don't work, let me know, and I'll tell you how to delete your Spotlight database and have it rebuild itself. ___________________________________________ Randy B.
