The master password for the keychain is your administrative password, unless you have changed the admin password recently. Sometimes, particularly when the admin password is set to (nothing) or just spaces, the keychain gets confused. This is EXACTLY why Apple and I both recommend that you NOT set your master password to (nothing) or just spaces! The solution to this problem has been described: boot from your OS X install discs, ignore the offer to reinstall your OS, go to the menubar and choose the option to reset password. This will reset your admin AND keychain password to whatever you've now selected (which will NOT, I trust, be blank). First of all let me say GOOD ON YOU for looking into the crash log! This can (despite its high tendency for gobbledegook) be a good place to start troubleshooting. Sadly, the complete iTunes crash log would be a lot more helpful than just the short excerpt you provided here. In particular, what you are looking for in the (sometimes quite lengthy) crash report is which THREAD has crashed, and particularly if you see a mention of any other programs besides iTunes in the crash log. Due to the restrictions of this list, I would ask that you PLEASE not post the entire crash log to the list. If you'd like me to take a look at, just email it to me off-list and I'll see if I can discern any clues. In the meantime, did you recently upgrade RAM or make any significant changes to the system, or add in any new iTunes plugins? Hopefully "maxed out" means you have at least 1 or 2 GB RAM. And you have a sweet machine. http://lowendmac.com/imacs/emac-2005-1.42-ghz.html Here, "updating" means going to the latest version of the current OS, meaning 10.4.11. This includes Safari 3 which is much improved version which also comes with 10.5 Leopard. Use the "combo" update rather than a series of incremental updates. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html > > Everything is working and I have a lot of stuff I really don't want > to break, some of which I would probably have > to pay dearly to update/upgrade. Hopefully, "a lot of stuff" means a bunch of applications in their proper place, the Applications folder, and that all your data is in your Users folder under your Home folder. Updating your OS will leave your Users folder alone. And if you do not have a bunch of hacks, including some odd-ball shareware, and you have not made cute changes via Terminal, which modify the way your OS works, all your applications will also be left alone. Now, to "upgrade" means something else: going to 10.5 Leopard. Here, there are many new capabilities. Apple's own applications are improved. However, note that your eMac will not support all of Leopard's capabilities. For example, you do not meet requirements for one of the Leopard features, DVD Player. You cannot do Boot Camp, or load Windows with Parallels. http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/ Also, there is the possibility that a new version of the OS can leave applications behind until the vendor catches up with an update. Watch for some impact if you run old peripheral devices where you would need to update the drivers. If you upgrade to Leopard, do NOT take the "Upgrade" option given to you by the installer. This merely interleaves the new 10.5 software with portions of the 10.4. Small things can go awry, even to disaster. Go for the Archive and Install option. This puts the old OS 10.4 aside in a safe place, and it drops the entire new 10.5 package in place, without touching your applications and data. And it still protects your system settings. David Pogue's recent editions of his Mac OS X The Missing Manual and similar publications which may be in your campus library go into more detail. Also, there is plenty of guidance along this line on the web. > I have a silver powerbook that I can play with if I want to test > but hate to break > it also since I do a lot with it, but I could. Yes, if you also want to update/upgrade it. But to put a fine point on all the above, you should back up anything you cannot afford to lose. Burn to CDs or DVDs. Buy or borrow an external hard drive. Do it at the computer lab on campus. Even some iPods have the same capacity as the original hard drive on your eMac. Also, you can clone your hard drive or parts of it with Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) (free) or with SuperDuper ($30). Macworld has reviews on the latest versions online. > > > What are your benchmarks for determining if/when you update your > system? Time has gone by since the release of the software and bug fixes have come out. The new software has at least one feature I want. The machine meets the minimum requirements. The idea of keeping up with the latest versions of applications, both Apple and non-Apple, which sometimes leave older versions of the OS behind. Final comment, after I bought an iMac with OS 10.5, I upgraded my 12" iBook, G4/1.33 GHz (2005) from 10.4 to 10.5, just to keep the OSs the same. I especially love the new version of SpotLight. It is a great improvement over the version in 10.4, even to giving me hits on e- mails that I have stored. For amateur and professional genealogists alike, Reunion is generally recognized as the gold standard for Macintosh users. You can download a demo version from: http://leisterpro.com/ In the ReunionTalk forum: http://www.reuniontalk.com/index.php? using the search term "gene," I found this thread: ReunionTalk > Using Software & Hardware with Reunion > Gene file identification? A Reunion user, "dfilpus" with 71 posts in the forum, indicates a successful transition from Gene to Reunion by exporting a Gedcom. I believe that you, as a non-member, can run the same query and browse the forum. As for the forum itself, I doubt that one can find a friendlier group. The support mechanisms for Reunion are superb. In addition to ReunionTalk, Frank Leister has a team of people who weigh in on unique problems, even to working with files submitted by users. Good luck with your choice. Message-ID: <2552fa090809192342p19b16f85ge6505d1b8b5860eb@mail.gmail.com> I just tried installing Leopard (10.5.4) on my G5 single with "archive and install". It worked fine until the end, where I got a message saying that the installation was almost complete - a minute left. After about 10 minutes, I clicked on the "utilities" menu in the menu bar and suddenly got a spinning beach ball. The progress bar stopped moving at the same time. The situation remained the same for over an hour before I shut down my G5. I rebooted without the install DVD and got an intro video and then Migration Manager kicked in. The video and Migration Manager continued recycling if anything besides migrating system and network prefs. I went for that as I thought that the other bits could probably be transfered later. I got the following error message: "Networking settings could not be transferred correctly" I booted into the system. Looong boot up with a yellowish-white screen, then a black one and then finally I got a prompt to set settings, register, etc. Access to the Internet through my router worked, I also suddenly got a prompt that updates to the system were available. I decided things couldn't get that much worse, so I updated to 10.5.5. The system rebooted and things still seem to be working, though I still think the system boot is long compared to Tiger. Looking at the bright side, I have what seems to be a working system. I also have a folder on the drive labeled "previous system". What do I do now? 1) Should I boot from the install DVD and run Disk Utility to check disk is OK and permissions are fine? 2) How do I get all of my user stuff, apps, preferences registration keys, etc. (particularly my Mail prefs, mailboxes, accounts, etc.) transfered from the "previous system"? 3) Can I just move the OS 9 stuff that was with Tiger to the trash? I waited as long as I did to upgrade to Leopard, to make sure that Apple had sussed out the upgrade procedure. This obviously still isn't the case. Anyway, it is strange that the Leopard install process hic-uped at the very end. I have a few questions in mind. But first, I would check to see if the G5 is happy with itself. Go to: "Mac OS X: About This Mac "build" information" at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1633 Your Build should read "9F33." Check for that in the About this Mac window in the Apple Menu. Click on the grey Version 10.5.5 item just under the black Mac OS X. Or go the long way, clicking on More Info to bring up the System Profiler, then click on Software in the left column to look at System Version. Were you using a retail Leopard disk that is black in color, or a grey disk issued for a specific model Mac? Did you have all your peripheral devices, especially USB, printers and such disconnected, or at least turned off? Was there any hint of an electrical power interruption during the install? Or maybe your DVD drive needs another cleaning? On Sep 20, 2008, at 2:42 AM, Brian Durant wrote: > I just tried installing Leopard (10.5.4) on my G5 single with > "archive and install". Leopard boot is still longer for me on my machine with only 512 MB RAM. But it may speed up a bit for you after a few times, especially if you let Spotlight finish its indexing. > > Looking at the bright side, I have what seems to be a working > system. You can do both from Disk Utility in your Leopard Applications folder. If Verify Disk shows need for repair, then you would use the DVD to do the repair. > > 2) How do I get all of my user stuff, apps, preferences registration > keys, etc. (particularly my Mail prefs, mailboxes, accounts, etc.) > transfered from the "previous system"? Basically, it is just a drag and replace process. I would first remove the item being replaced from its location, putting it in a safe out of the way folder and then drag the corresponding item from the previous folder. You mail boxes remain untouched in your Users folder (little house). Your apps remain untouched, but some third party apps may need to be reinstalled to work correctly. If you have problems with settings, you could try looking into the Preferences folders in the System and Users libraries, but I would first run the problem by one of these e-lists for best recommendations on where to look. You can go to the Apple Support tab and run a search on "archive and install" , with the quotation marks. Here, among many others, there is this article, "Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5: About installation options": http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US If the "US" tag does not work for you, just look for the Article: HT1545. > 3) Can I just move the OS 9 stuff that was with Tiger to the trash? Yes, if you are absolutely certain that you will never want to use OS 9 again, either by replacing Leopard or by partitioning your hard drive to have both Tiger and Leopard available. > > I waited as long as I did to upgrade to Leopard, to make sure that > Apple had sussed out the upgrade procedure. I have installed a Plextor DVDR PX-800A, so I have a new DVD drive. No problems with the drive so far. My main problem with the apps is with regards to the preferences and license info. I have a copy of ChronoSync, so I could in principle simply sync the folders between my current system and my previous system. Without some sort of migration or sync I lose all info in iTunes about my iPod and my iPhone, etc. not to mention all of the other apps. I am also trying to get some help from some online forums, but you and Bill are the only ones that have so far dared to reply on this mess. I am not a heavy user. I did not need back-ups as often as the default, so I got a App to do it once a day. Then my first problem problem was a corrupt Mac Mail App. I opened Time Machine and reinstalled the Back-up of before my Corruption. GREAT. I have found everything I have checked is backed up. TM can back everything up, individual apps don't use TM, you use TM which BY DEFAULT backs up your entire system but you can select files and folders not to back up. -- Best wishes Malcolm Cornelius - The Powerbook Fanatic http://www.pbfanatic.co.uk From globetrotterdk at gmail.com Sun Sep 28 07:21:13 2008 From: globetrotterdk at gmail.com (Brian Durant) Date: Sun Sep 28 07:23:11 2008 Subject: [X-Newbies] Time Machine In-Reply-To: <5E2EE60B-5C52-49AC-B507-99D4F43A04D5@fireflyuk.net> References: <2552fa090809261050y551dbabfvc6615079cad87ff5@mail.gmail.com> <440F1772-596A-4A6F-A64E-5A011AC1A9E6@mac.com> <2552fa090809280120j6e2d5d3ewa4b771b95dd970db@mail.gmail.com> <5E2EE60B-5C52-49AC-B507-99D4F43A04D5@fireflyuk.net> Message-ID: <2552fa090809280721k3b324b88qcee1d55c900108f7@mail.gmail.com> Thanks Malcolm. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There's no "how-to" because there's no "how." You don't do anything apart from connect an external drive to your Mac, tell Time Machine (when it asks) that you want to use that drive for your Time Machine backups, and ... there's no step three. TM will make a backup of the entire drive (it takes a while, the first time) and then after that will update the drive hourly with any new info you've put on it. You don't need to do anything.
