Anyone here?!! I'm desperate for help, so thought I'd give it a try anyway .... My Xserve G5 running OS 10.3.9 experienced a power outage this afternoon. I've had 100% up time since it went online in early October 2005. (Adding an interruptible power supply is on my list of things to do, but I didn't get to it yet, unfortunately.) Following the power outage this afternoon, the server restarted and came right back online as it was set to do. However the one mailbox in the mail system apparently was corrupted somehow, and now I get the following error when I try to check mail: POP server said: -ERR [SYS/PERM] Could not read message file I tried deleting the mailbox and recreating it, but that didn't seem to make any difference -- I still get the same error -- and the same number of messages are still there, too -- does that mean my deletion attempt didn't work? I'm not worried too much about losing mail already in the box (about 70 messages, I think), as I wouldn't have received much important mail today on a Saturday. However I need to have it working by Monday at the latest, preferably sooner. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Thanks in advance, Bob From chris at uoregon.edu Tue Jan 24 11:44:40 2006 From: chris at uoregon.edu (Chris W) Date: Tue Jan 24 11:45:01 2006 Subject: [X-Servers] Power Outage and Mail Box Corruption In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Bob, Did you resolve this issue? In response to your first question, I for one am still reading the list, but I do not have good answers for you. I presume that you booted into single user mode and did an fsck on this server before bringing it back online, which is my one piece of advise. Chris W. Thanks for responding, Chris ... looks like only a handful of us are left here. Yes, I've resolved it. Not entirely to my satisfaction, but I'm back in business. Repairing permissions on the server got my mailing lists back and running properly again. That also allowed me to successfully delete and recreate the mailbox that got corrupted. I was not able to save the approximately 200 messages in the corrupted box, but it being the weekend, I don't think there was anything really valuable there. FWIW, I got the help I needed, within minutes, from the bulletin boards on Apple's support site. It's up to 45% (not 90), but still much too much for this deamon. I have a machine whereas you can see cpu-load rise over 7 days till about 45% and then falling back to 10% only for the start of next rise over some days. No Security-Update nor System-Updates (tried till 10.4.3, 10.4.4 will be next) nor any other maintenance have changed this behaviour? I'm interested in a solution as well! ;-) Marcel +--- mailto:mhochuli@a-f.ch otherto:noway@a-f.ch _______________________________________________ Am 24.01.2006 um 20:46 schrieb John May: > Has anyone seen servermanagerserver running away with cpu time on > 10.2.x server? I recall being able to reduce the number by doing a reboot, but it made the 10.2 server work like windows, we had to reboot fairly regularly to reduce the problem. For what its worth, this problem went away for us when we switched to 10.3. Chris W. I've just disabled the servermanagerserver under /etc/hostconfig. Trying to avoid eBay with this puppy so thought I'd let the list know: We are retiring our original G4 Xserve and will put it up foor sale. Some particulars include: Dual Gig processors, 2 Gb Ram; 4 sleds with 120Gb Hitachi drives in each - the oldest from 2004, the newest just last year so three year warranties for these drives still valid. One extra drive sled plus all the "fake" sleds that came with it when shipped. Second ethernet card (so dual ethernet capabilities). Video card in one slot. I'll throw in a 17" Apple Display, keyboard, and mouse for the additional cost of shipping only. In it's lifetime we replaced one logic board, one power supply and one ATA bridge - all covered under AppleCare and done onsite here by M.A.C.Solutions, an accredited Apple tech and reseller here in Metro Detroit. I still have the original Xserve box from Small Dog Electronics. It's rack mounted now, so all that hardware is still attached / intact. It came with OSX Jaguar Server but the boot drive will be wiped before we do anything. I just installed a fresh copy of Panther Server 10.3.9 - Unlimitied Client so it's good to go. Still works right now but would have to sell "as is". I have a 100% Good Trader status on eBay so wouldn't sell anything that jeopardized my good standing. It was our company data server- 19 users. Basically housed User folders and public art files. Did not do anything spectacular with it - just ran it for years with relatively little issues. I have more problems with our iMacs than this puppy. Thought we'd keep it as a spare but decided to get a cluster to back up the G5 to "keep it in the family". If interested, drop me an email at; mspeck@strategy-network.com or call me days at 734-464-8100 and we'll talk Xserve Price: $1,000.00 plus whatever actual shipping costs are calculated. As with servermanager, it requires a reboot -- in fact, the Xserve occasionally reboots itself spontaneously. I have seen GETTY take up well over 100% of CPU time (on a dual processor Xserve). Anyone seen this? Any clues? peter From adamsp at cs.umb.edu Thu Jan 26 12:23:31 2006 From: adamsp at cs.umb.edu (Peter C.S. Their site is http://shirt-pocket.com/. No, I haven't tried that. I have used two methods: 1. Carbon Copy Cloner Fast and efficient, makes bootable copies, but can't do incremental backups without installing additional software (psync). 2. The "ditto" command A built-in command line tool that can be scheduled and which handles resource forks correctly. However, it can't do incremental backups. Thanks a *LOT* Apple. Smart. Example: ditto --rsrc /Volumes/internaldrive /Volumes/externaldrive I am looking into xtar, a version of tar that can handle resource forks, which I'm told comes standard with 10.4, and rsync: You may be interested in the following discussions on this topic.
