well, 2 years ago that cube wasn't running OS X (i guess it could have been, but unlikely). also, in that time, when it was an os 9 box (shudder) when installing 10.x, was it just installed on top of os 9? then continually upgraded over the past couple of years? that alone can lead to an unstable environment - it leads to what some call "cruft." crap left over and corrupted due to multiple upgrades over time. or simply, operating system degradation. that, and from what i continually see from other experiences this issue of OS X being "picky" with RAM - or the same RAM that works fine with os 9, won't work with OS X.
