Even if G4 500 was faster on Altivec by some degree, unless your needs are extremely specialized you probably won't use Altivec more than say 5% of the time. The faster clock speed 95% of the time is a much more substantial factor in overall performance. You'd have to be running Photoshop filters that utilize Altivec virtually all the time. And in our tests, the faster clock speed more than makes up for Altivec because the Altivec unit is running at 5/9th the speed (not to mention the L2 cache running at 2/9th.)
