itunes store music quaility

I know this has been covered before.....

I have bought a few albums from the itunes store, and the quality is 
just not great. I know audiophiles, have problem with it, but frankly, 
with my cube and soundsticks, I hear distortion with my downloaded 
itunes music I don't get with my ripped CD's. I have always used the 
default settings. I contacted Apple and they will let me redownload one 
more time.

What should I set the settings at to maximize the quality?
