Thanks for your replies, Boris and Jonathan.  Interestingly, the Dave 
icons were not in System/Library/PreferencePanes but I noticed that 
there is a file in User/Library/Caches called 
com.apple.preferencepanes.cache which when moved to the trash solves 
the problem! Hooray! But why would the preference panes need to be 
cahed?
