Gaming performance vs USB speakers

Read the CubeOwner FAQ last night.

What's this I see about "doubling game performance" by disconnecting the USB
speakers (graphics cards section)? Is it a general rule or does it apply to
some specific titles only? And... If I run audio output through the iMic
instead, would that change anything (I guess not)?
