If you go to the spec page of the PowerBooks (http://www.apple.com/powerbook/specs.html) you can see that the speed of the drives are different depending on the model of the PowerBook: Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW); reads DVDs at 8x speed; writes CD-R discs at 24x speed; writes CD-RW discs at 10x speed; reads CDs at 24x speed (12-inch model) Optional SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW); writes DVD-R discs at 1x speed; reads DVDs at 8x speed; writes CD-R discs at 8x speed; writes CD-RW discs at 4x speed; reads CDs at 24x speed (12-inch model) Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW); reads DVDs at 8x speed; writes CD-R and CD-RW discs at 8x speed; reads CDs at 24x speed (15-inch models) SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW); writes DVD-R discs at 1x speed; reads DVDs at 6x speed; writes CD-R discs at 8x speed; writes CD-RW discs at 4x speed; reads CDs at 24x speed (15-inch models) SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW); Writes DVD-R discs at 2x speed; reads DVDs at 6x speed; writes CD-R discs at 8x speed; writes CD-RW discs at 4x speed; reads CDs at 24x speed (17-inch model) There are 2 different models of combo drive: 8/8/8/24 & 8/24/10/24 (the newer one, in the 12" PowerBook) And 3 different models of SuperDrive: 1/6/8/4/24; 1/8/8/4/24 & 2/6/8/4/24 !!! I would prefer a combo drive writing CD-R at 24x speed, rather than a SuperDrive. -- François Menu frmen at wanadoo.fr
