Marty,
I had a similar problem installing Jag on my Cube (sock G4/500 with a 
GF3). The problem turned out to be firmware. 10.1 installed fine with 
the old firmware, but Jag didn't. After updating the firmware, it 
installed without a hitch.
Also, if you're more than 1 version behind, make sure to update the 
firmware 1 step at a time, you can't go from the really old all the way 
to the current in 1 shot. I spent about an hour trying to figure this 
part out...
