I think the 'sleep' that some have trouble recovering from is CPU sleep or some call it "deep sleep".  

I never do a complete sleep, never have on a desktop machine. I have Energy Saver set to "Put computer to sleep", Never, Monitor sleep after 10 minutes and drive to sleep "whenever possible." That works just fine with no wake up problems with a PL 1 Gig upgrade.
