I've thought about this as well. Notebook drives are quieter on average than desktop drives. I've seen "converters" that accept a notebook drive and fit into larger mounting brackets. Perhaps a Travelstar 5400RPM, 8MB cache drive would work well. In any case, it would open up some airspace in there.
