Optical Mouse failure

Has anyone on this List experienced (USB) Optical Mouse failure?

It appears that a weakening wire at the connection between the plastic 
mouse and the mouse cable is causing the red laser to "flicker".

If I could dis-assemble the mouse, I might be able to replace the USB 
cable. Can you point me to a link that discusses dis-assembling the USB 
Optical Mouse?

Or is it better to throw the mouse away, and buy a new one?
