I don't see any replies to your query.  What happened to me when I 
upgraded to OSX without upgrading the FIRMWARE was that I got only the 
spinning colored ball perpetually when I tried to start up in OSX.  
Finally I took the machine to an Apple technician where they fixed the 
problem simply by upgrading the Firmware.
