Yup, whiner, here! Actually, it's not entirely the same. As you already said, for the method you (and Brooks) described, the root user needs to be enabled. That means someone can login as root, even from a remote machine. That in itself is a security hazard. Not a big one, assuming that you choose your root password carefully, but still. There.
