Another option would be to make /Users a symlink to
/Volumes/PartitionName.

Have you done this with no repercussions? I would expect some Unix
things (such as email or potentially web services) to dislike this.

That it is. I'm a Unix fan, not a Mac fan. It just so happens that
today's best consumer-grade Unix _is_ Mac OS. :)
