OT: Path Names

Sorry for the non-cube/OS X related question:
when opening a file nested within folders what is the proper path for 
"go to"
Tried the following w/o luck:
macintoshHD/*username*/public/*foldername*/*foldername*

Specifically-moved some linked photos from the desktop into the proper 
folder AFTER they were
placed in an Illustrator document. Was asked to update the linked 
photos. Wanted to use go to
to speed things up........
