Try it first to make sure everything works ok...but for the most part, I don't see any problems. I used to carry an external drive around with me everywhere so any mac I sat in front of was always my system :) If you hold the OPTION key at startup, it will display all the bootable drives as buttons. Click the one you want to start from, and your golden. As long as the drive has power (or in some cases...is powered by the firewire cable), you can then choose it as the startup disk, and when you start the system up it should look at the external disk to boot.
