Yes, absolutely.  There's been a lot of trouble with people losing the 
data on external firewire hard drives if they boot with them attached.  
Check out http://www.macfixit.com/ for a summary. Apple has identified 
a problem with FW800 drives, but others have seen that FW400 drives are 
affected, too.
