They are just "regular" USB devices that swallow the total 500MW that 
USB ports on a Mac or PC are supposed to deliver

With a powered hub  _each_  port gets (at least) 500Mw of power! On a 
nonpowered hub the incoming power (which should be 500mw) is available 
for any device on any given port.

Just like Apple's states that their systems can only write DVD-R. Apple 
goes to any length to protect their market and still many people 
believe it.

Have you ever seen an article from Apple telling you that buying memory 
from nextdoor PC shop is a smart thing to do? Nope, Apple goes a long 
way to protect it business and will sell you memory that has twice the 
price and is 100% identical to the cheaper.

Don't ever expect Apple to tell you that competitor's (and cheaper) 
stuff will work fine in their systems. Just take a look at the price 
Apple charges for a run-of-the-shell Pioneer DVD burner, the exactly 
the same can be bought for 30% less! Apple is not going to tell you 
that.
